Find Rings

During the process of finding rings (e.g., tree ring identification), the entire composite image is scanned by the workstation computer to determine the boundaries between late and early wood indicating the presence of a tree ring. These boundary locations are marked on the image that you view in the image display area with red lines.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Depending on the size of the composite image, this can be a lengthy process. You may expect approximately 1 to 3 minutes per frame. For example, a 10-frame image may take between 10 and 30 minutes to complete the 'Find Rings' task.

Procedure

After completing the 'Create Mosaic' task, you may begin the 'Find Rings' task. 'Find Rings' is initiated by either:

  1. Answering "Yes" to the "Do you wish to continue with tree ring identification?" dialog box upon completing 'Create Mosaic'.
  2. Using File -> Open to open a file in which 'Create Mosaic' was previously completed and then clicking the 'Find Rings' button.

In either case, you are presented with the following screen:

During the process of finding tree rings, the TREES system will present you with various Progress Gauges indicating the status of the completion of the task. It is normal for the progress gauge to show different tasks as it proceeds. The following Progress Gauge is typical for a 'Find Rings' session:

When the 'Find Rings' task is complete, you will see the following screen:

The mosaiced image with tree ring edges highlighted in red is now available for you to view in the image display area of the main screen. The slide controls on the vertical and horizontal scroll bars may be used to view different parts of the composite image. The 'Find Rings' button is now outlined in blue indicating the task is complete.

The TREES system will ask if you wish to continue to the 'Measure Rings' task. Clicking on the "Yes" button will initiate this task. If you answer 'No' , you will be shown a File->Save dialog and asked if you want to save the results of the current session.
