To design a high-performance communication link for the atmospheric free-space optical (FSO) channel, it is of great importance to characterize the channel from the perspective of information and coding theory. In this project, we study the Shannon capacity of the atmospheric FSO link and modulation and coding techniques to achieve it. We use an accurate scintillation models to predict the fluctuation of the intensity signal. This statistical representation not only fits the channels scintillation accurately, but its parameters can be related to the physical conditions of turbulence.
