Getting people to pronounce my name correctly has been my most difficult task. It is so sad that I have not been able to get any non-Vietnamese speaker to pronounce it correctly. Sorry, it is a little bit tricky. I created this page to explain how you should say my name. And I even provided the recordings for you. So, please practice.
In Vietnamese, my name is written as:
Nguyễn Việt Dũng
Here is some facts:
- Most Vietnamese names have three parts: Family name, middle name, and given name, written in this order.
- Vietnamese are called by their given name and not their family name alone.
- In Vietnamese, the D is pronounced Z, so the correct "English" pronunciation for Dung is Dzung. However, Dung (female name) is different from Dũng (male name).
- Vietnamese given names always have a meaning. Dũng means strong and courage while Dung means beautiful countenance.
