A valve is a device used to control the fluid flow through a pipe. Shown below is a schematic of one type of valve -- there are many more. Valves simply constrict the flow of a fluid through a pipe. They may be completely opened to allow normal flow, completely closed to stop flow, or placed somewhere in between to limit flow. They work on both liquid and gas streams, and are often found on the exit stream of a tank.
