A settling tank is simply a vessel where a fluid is separated by being allowed to rest for a period of time. During this time, particulates may float to the top or settle to the bottom of the tank. Floating particulates may be skimmed off, or the liquid drained to leave residual sinking particulates. A settling tank may also be used to allow different liquid phases to separate into specific layers. Due to the layering effect, settling tanks are typically smaller in horizontal cross section than vertical cross section, that is they are positioned vertically.
