A pipe is the piece of equipment you are already familiar with. It is a tube used to contain and conduct liquids and gasses from one place to another. Pipes must often be specialized to fit substance they are transporting and the unit operations they are transporting the substance to. As such they may need to be of a specific material to reduce corrosion, of a certain grade to reduce drag on the stream, or they may need to be insulated to reduce heat transfer. Pipes are often used as parts of other unit operations, such as the containment between two substances in many types of heat exchangers or as the outer or inner walls of many reactors.
