A compressor is a piece of equipment used to increase the pressure of a gas stream. It may consist of a fan causing shaft work upon the gas, a form of pump, or simply a reduction in the diameter of a pipe. All of these serve to increase the pressure on gas stream. Note: liquids are for the most part incompressible, and as such compressors not used on liquid streams.
