One thousand kilograms per hour of a mixture containing equal parts by mass of ethanol and water is distilled. Product streams leave the top and the bottom of the distillation column. The flowrate of the bottom stream is measured and found to be 673 kg/h, and the overhead stream is analyzed and found to contain 96 wt% ethanol. Find the flowrates of all components in all streams.

Now that we have filled in all the information that we can directly, we need to think about our other two methods for working with the table.

We can use the fact that the total flowrate is the sum of the components in the stream or the fact that the total flowrate times the mass fraction of a component is the flowrate of that component.

We can also use a mass balance where the mass flowing into the process must be equal to the mass flowing out of the process.

What would you like to do next fdsg?

Streams\mass flow rate Total Ethanol Water
Feed 1000 Ffeed,ethanol Ffeed,water
Overhead Foverhead,total Foverhead,ethanol Foverhead,water
Bottoms 673 Fbottoms,ethanol Fbottoms,water
