I am a University of Arizona freshman seeking an engineering internship for summer employment while working toward a Mechanical Engineering Bachelor of Science degree. An internship interests me simply because my education grants me exposure to engineering from the student standpoint exclusively. The employee perspective can provide me with experience that cannot be taught in textbooks, allowing for a substantial gain in knowledge in the engineering field prior to completing my degree.

As you can see from my enclosed resume, I am currently enrolled in the Honors College and have a grade point average of 3.4 on an unweighted 4.0 scale. Although my engineering experience is not extensive, I am a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers as well as the Arizona Solar Racing Team. Participating as a member of these teams allows me to apply classroom knowledge to physical engineering projects, through design competitions and car construction.

In my past experiences over the last four years with the Aquatics department, I have worked well in the environment the City of Phoenix has provided. I hope that you find me suitable for an internship position within your department. If you need any further information from me, or have any questions about me, please call me at (520) 555-1212 or email me at SCare@hotmail.com.

  Sincerely,

  Stephanie Care

Notice the nice introduction of the student. They clearly and quickly let the contact know what they are applying for and a little bit about why. The second paragraph stresses the team projects and extracurricular things they are doing, along with referring to information on their resume. The last paragraph gives further information about how they can be contacted and gives closure to the letter.
