Research: Performance Evaluation of Selective Jamming Attacks

We investigate the impact of a selective jammer in the performance of wireless networks. Selective jamming attacks are characterized by an adversary that uses its knowledge of protocol specifics to target messages that are needed for the operation of a network. We implement selective jamming adversaries in multi-hop wireless network scenarios. The network consists of nodes running AODV routing protocol to discover and establish routing paths, as well as TCP protocol for transporting information transmitted. Real-time classification is focused on the MAC, network, and transport layers of the OSI stack. The jammer is emulated in the victims. Every victim node filters each received packet after it is processed by the PHY layer. The filter classifies and discards the packet with some probability. We quantify the impact of selective jamming by measuring application delays, average throughput, and time that the adversary remains active.
